ATTENTION! RADON!

The United States Environmental Protection Agency states in their bulletin Home Buyer’s and Seller’s Guide to Radon (bulletin # 402-R-93-003, pg. 16);

If you use a testing professional, only hire an EPA listed or state certified individual and ask to see his or her photo identification. The contractor’s identification number should be clearly visible on the test report.

Professional Home Inspectors agree that only those Residential Radon Measurement Service Providers that are properly trained, tested and EPA compliant are qualified to deliver accurate Radon Test Results.

The New York State Sanitary Code (10 NYCRR 16.130), requires all firms conducting radon testing in New York State to report summary information regarding each test to the New York State Department of Health twice a year. Ask your tester if they comply with this law, if not, don't hire them. Ask your tester if they have Professional Radon training that is compliant with EPA protocols and are certified by The National Environmental Health Association as a Residential Radon Measurement Service Provider. You can also confirm their qualification by calling the NYS Dept. of Health at 1-800-458-1158. If they are not listed with the state do not hire them. The National Environmental Health Association says: "Individuals holding the Residential Measurement Provider certification have demonstrated knowledge of U.S. EPA radon measurement protocols for the placement and retrieval of radon measurement devices. They have also demonstrated knowledge of the proper interpretation of results obtained in residential settings. These individuals are authorized to place devices that are analyzed by a NEHA certified analytical laboratory."

In all of New York State there are approximately only fifty EPA compliant, trained (qualified/approved) Residential Radon Measurement Service Providers - i.e. listed with the New York State Department of Health. These professionals participate in the Radon Measurement Proficiency Program, a voluntary program that was started by the U.S.E.P.A. This program trains and tests the participant with a rigorous examination. Listed Professional Radon testers must maintain very specific quality controls and standards of practice. Their quality controls and testing records are periodically audited. When having their testing devices analyzed the Professional Radon tester uses only laboratories compliant with the program and certified by the State. These State certified laboratories must observe procedures and protocols outlined by the EPA. The Radon testing and analysis performed by listed Professional Radon testers can be relied upon to be accurate and stand up in a court of law and to close scrutiny. Can that be said of those people testing who are not compliant with the EPA's program and are not listed with the New York State Department of Health?
